ABOUT
THE BIG ANNIE STATUE

The Big Annie life-size bronze statue will serve as a permanent and visually striking landmark located in downtown Calumet, MI.  The statue will depict Big Annie holding the American flag as she led strike marches in support of the local miners during the 1913 copper strike.  This statue will enhance the experience of visitors by providing an accessible and engaging connection to the copper story. An interpretive sign will further draw people in, inviting them to learn about Annie's pivotal role in the 1913 strike.

Andy Sacksteder graduated from Ohio State University with a degree in landscape horticulture. His flair for artistry in landscape design earned him a solid reputation as an exceptional landscaper. Many of his landscape
creations are truly works of art. Several years ago, Andy decided to pursue a lifelong dream of becoming a sculptor. As fate would have it, his path led him to an enthusiastic local sculptor who gave him encouragement and handed him his first block of clay. He hasn't stopped "playing with clay"
since.

Andy began his first pieces by making busts from pictures of his own children, photos from magazines, and various works of art, spending nights pouring through books and CD's on portrait sculpture and human anatomy. His exceptional attention to detail and keen eye for capturing a person's likeness lead to Andy's uncanny ability to create a 3D work of art
from a one dimensional image. In his travels through the US and Europe, Andy sought and studied sculptures of all shapes and sizes, in order to absorb different techniques and styles up close.
